What Is a Montessori Work?

You will often hear our teachers refer to the various “works” on the shelves in our classrooms. These are a blend of carefully curated teacher made activities along with Montessori materials that specifically target key areas such as literacy, numeracy, social-emotional learning, motor development, and science.

These materials are thoughtfully organized, intentionally structured, and placed on shelves so children can choose them independently. Each work has a clear purpose, and children engage with it at their own pace.

How We Use Works in Our Classrooms

In our classrooms, Montessori works are typically presented to the children in small groups or individually, depending on the developmental readiness of each child. Teachers demonstrate how to properly use the work, reinforcing the skill that the material is intended to teach, and return it to the shelf so it is ready for when the next learner chooses to use it. Our teachers are the guides in our prepared classroom environments, and they play a crucial role in curating the shelves to meet our little learners' evolving interests and development. They are constantly observing and responding to the needs and interests of our children, ensuring the shelves are always filled with works that inspire and challenge them. These are rotated throughout the year to align with developmental readiness and classroom interest.

Why Montessori Works Are Essential for Young Learners

Montessori works are much more than classroom activities, they are tools that build foundational skills such as fine motor, complex problem solving, early numeracy, literacy and cognitive. Because each work focuses on a specific skill and provides opportunities for repetition, children experience the deep, meaningful practice that leads to true mastery. Whether they are pouring water, tracing letters, or sorting natural objects, they are developing their concentration, coordination, and independence, which builds the strong foundation they will take with them for life.
