Studio Classes at The Washington Market School

Studio Classes at The Washington Market School

There are countless ways in which The Washington Market School is unique, one of them is our Studio Program. Each week, our learners at both Duane and Hudson Street engage in Art, Music, Library, Chess, and specific to Hudson Street – Movement and Drama. Our studio classes are designed to nurture the natural curiosity and playfulness of our learners.

Across each studio, children are invited to explore, create, question, imagine, collaborate, and think critically. In the Art studios, learners experiment with tools, textures, and materials as they build fine motor skills and feel confident in their creative choices. Our Music program is heavily influenced by music from around the world, exposing our children to different cultures and expanding their appreciation for and knowledge of life outside of New York City. In the Library, our children’s language development is supported through storytelling, book exploration, and American Sign Language. Through Chess, children build early problem-solving skills, focus, and confidence as they learn strategy through playful storytelling. In Movement and Drama, children bring stories to life through creative movement and dramatic play, strengthening self-expression, collaboration, and emotional awareness.

The sense of freedom that the children experience in each studio is intentional and made possible through the incredibly thoughtful and detailed planning that each studio teacher engages in month to month. In partnership with our Site Directors, the studio teachers generate their curriculum around the needs and development of the children, which supports the Journey pillar of our Strategic Plan: Deep Roots, Vibrant Future.
