Exploring Child-Centered Learning at Early Partners School

Exploring Child-Centered Learning at Early Partners School

Earlier this year, two members of our faculty traveled to New Orleans to visit the Early Partners School, a Reggio Emilia-inspired program that emphasizes creativity and child-centered learning. Experiences like these reflect The Washington Market School’s ongoing commitment to our five-year strategic plan, Deep Roots, Vibrant Future. Built around four pillars: Purpose, Educators, Journey, and Future, the plan is guided by targeted goals that support the continued growth of our school community. Goal 2 of the Educators pillar focuses specifically on maintaining a commitment to professional growth through meaningful learning opportunities and collaboration.

One of the biggest takeaways from the experience was the idea that creativity exists within every child and grows through opportunities for curiosity and discovery. The visit reinforced the role of the adult as a co-constructor of learning, accompanying children’s thinking without rushing them and remaining open to their ideas and perspectives. The teachers were inspired by the school’s approach to inclusion, flexibility, and honoring the many different ways children learn and engage with the world around them.

The school’s environment also left a lasting impression. Housed in a historic New Orleans firehouse, the campus includes indoor, outdoor, and hybrid classrooms designed to evolve alongside the children’s interests and discoveries. One especially memorable example involved children working together to solve a flooding issue in their outdoor classroom, demonstrating creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in action. Experiences like these continue to inspire WMS teachers, strengthen classroom practice, and reinforce the school’s commitment to investing in the growth and development of its educators.
