Hair Exploration In Classroom GH

Hair Exploration In Classroom GH

In Classroom GH, there is a corner dedito “The Working Hair Salon and Barber Shop.” This project started as a collaborative effort between the teachers and learners, who brainstormed ideas to create their own salon space. The children began by constructing a hair dryer using simple materials like a cardboard circle and a long tube, along with loose parts from the materials room. After painting it black and purple and adding a few stars, the dryer was ready to use! The learners also designed different styles and colors of hair, experimenting with new looks while learning how to use the tools and techniques required to bring their salon ideas to life. A special feature of the salon is the Hair Sensory Wall, which invites children to explore different hair types and textures through hands-on experiences.

The salon serves as a space for our young learners to discuss and learn about inclusion and diversity. Through their interactions and exploration of various hair textures and styles, they gain a deeper understanding of the beauty and uniqueness of different hair types. This aligns with our ongoing ABAR (Anti-Bias Anti Racist) work, supporting children as they embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms.

Through their time in the salon, the children are learning and practicing a variety of skills. Practical life skills are a major focus as they engage in pretend play, taking turns, answering phone calls, and practicing self-care. Working at a salon requires lots of math skills! The children add numbers based on services provided, calculating totals for each “client”. As the children read words from the price list, word cards, and the Hair Sensory Wall, they are working on their literacy and writing. Fine motor skills are enhanced as they manipulate different hair tools, including combs, shavers, and brushes, as well as working with clips, bows, and hair rollers.

The Working Hair Salon and Barber Shop is not only a place for fun and creativity but also a valuable learning environment where learners can explore, play, and grow. The salon has quickly become a hub of activity in Classroom GH, and the children are enjoying every moment as they expand their skills and understanding of one another. With new clients coming in every day, there’s always something exciting happening in the salon. Families are invited to book an appointment and enjoy a GH discount on their first visit!
