Small Works 33
The Washington Market School's 2024 Art Show
The Washington Market School annual art show Small Works is a testament to the creativity, imagination, and joy of our children. Each year, the lower level of our Hudson Street site is transformed into a vibrant gallery showcasing the ideas, colors, marks, and exploratory work of our students.
At Small Works 33, children from WMS—joined by parents, siblings, extended families, alumni, faculty, staff, and educators from across New York City—visited the enthralling exhibition. Each classroom's display encapsulated the joy and curiosity of our young learners, as well as the deep dedication of their teachers.

For their It's the Forest! exhibit, children in Classroom 4 transformed natural materials like sand, soil, water, rocks, grass, sticks, and leaves into "a nice home for the animals." Here is a behind-the-scenes glimpse into their exciting process and exploration of soil and biodiversity!
Every day, our two incredible art teachers Kate Mangold and Stina Puotinen guide and inspire the children through their artistic journeys. Their expertise, encouragement, and attentiveness to each child's unique voice were evident in every piece presented.
On opening night, art teacher Kate was asked, “How do you get all these ideas for different projects?” Her answer? "Follow the children’s interests and let the material lead us." This philosophy of letting the children's imaginations guide the process is at the heart of what makes the art studio at WMS so unique.
Small Works is more than just an art show—it is a window into the exceptional process of teaching and learning at The Washington Market School. Thank you to all who attend and support this special event. And most importantly, congratulations to our young artists for sharing their incredible creativity with us all!
