Exmissions Process

At the Washington Market School, we offer a comprehensive and collaborative approach to navigating the kindergarten application process in New York City. This highly individualized experience centers the child every step of the way.

Step 1: The lay of the land

We begin our unique exmissions process a year in advance with a comprehensive seminar that outlines the kindergarten application process. Parents walk away with a thorough understanding of application requirements, deadlines, and the various school options available within New York City.

Step 2: The preliminary school list

In preparation for application season, we hold one-on-one meetings with parents to identify an optimal list of schools for their child. The child’s unique strengths and interests, as well as geographic, philosophical and religious factors, guide our conversation. This process helps families develop a school list that maximizes the chances of finding the right ongoing school match for them.

Step 3: The application process

Our exmissions team guides each family through each school’s unique application process, including touring, interviews, and recommendation letters. We not only help you stay on top of deadlines and technicalities — we’re there to provide feedback and help make strategic adjustments.

Step 4: The strategy session

After all applications have been submitted, our exmissions team reconvenes with each family to reassess strategy. Based on feedback from parents and admissions directors, we may add or remove target schools to bolster each family’s chances of acceptance.

Step 5: The school report

For children applying to ISAAGNY (Independent Schools Admissions Association of Greater New York) schools, we develop a comprehensive, confidential report. With great care and attention from teachers and site directors, we produce detailed, written reports that thoughtfully and accurately represent your child.

Step 6: The communication plan

Assistance is provided to parents in navigating critical, thoughtfully crafted correspondences with schools. This includes feedback on professional references, parent statements, and ensuring effective communication with the relevant individuals at each school.

Step 7: The final choice

Once schools have sent out decisions, our exmissions team helps guide families in making their final choice. If additional considerations such as waitlists come into play, our team endeavors to better understand each situation and secure an excellent outcome for every child.

Our exmissions process strives to ensure each child moves on to a school that feels like a just-right match where they will thrive and excel.
