From our Head of School

Dear friends and visitors,

I am thrilled to welcome you to The Washington Market School, a dynamic, non-profit preschool nestled in the heart of Tribeca, a truly special neighborhood originally known as Washington Market. Since 1976, when Founder and former Head of School, Ronnie Moskowitz, first brought our extraordinary school to life, WMS has served as a home away from home for young learners and their families. 

We are delighted that you are here exploring our website, where you will begin to discover who we are and how we bring the Montessori and Reggio-Emilia philosophies to life in a thoughtfully blended approach that celebrates each and every child and the people who serve them. You’ll also get to know the countless ways in which, as early childhood educators, we immerse ourselves in fostering a joyful community, keeping an Anti-Bias, Anti Racist lens at the forefront of our work so that each person (child and adult) may experience a deep sense of belonging.

In addition to our unique approach to teaching and learning, I invite you to take some time to delve into the many ways we support our parents on this precious journey. As a preschool, we are often the very first formal setting for new parents to find a community of friends. Through thoughtfully cultivated gatherings and ongoing parent education speaker series and events, we are able to serve as “parenting partners” in meaningful ways. From making the decision to join The Washington Market School community to determining where your child will enroll for the next step on their educational path, we are here to support you every step of the way.

Board of Trustees

The Washington Market School Board of Trustees is currently comprised of eleven members, most of whom have had long-standing affiliations with the school, either as parents, students or educators themselves. They bring vast experience to the board from their work in education, the arts, finance and law. The Board of Trustees meets regularly with the Head of School to keep abreast of the overall health and operations of the school while also fulfilling their fiduciary, governance and strategic planning functions, which include include setting policies for the school's overall strategic direction and mission, the hiring and evaluation of the Head of School and financial stewardship of the school's assets, endowment and annual operating budget. Each member is deeply committed to the school's mission to provide the best in early childhood education and act as ambassadors at large to promote the extraordinary education offered by The Washington Market School.
